Will a false ceiling keep a top floor room cooler in May?
It takes the edge off rather than fixing it. The air gap between the board and the roof slab slows the heat reaching the room, so the ceiling stops radiating at you the way bare plaster does, and that is most noticeable in the evening. If cooling is the main reason for the job, say so on the visit: insulation laid over the board, or a reflective coat on the terrace above, does far more than the ceiling alone and both are easier to arrange while the frame is open.
Can curved POP profiles and cornices still be done in a house here?

Our slab was finished by hand and is not level. Will that show?
Not once the new ceiling is hung, because the frame is levelled to its own line rather than following the slab above it. We read the slab at several points first to see how far it wanders, then set the level so the deepest point still clears the services. What the slab does above the board stops mattering, which is often the strongest argument for a ceiling in an older house.
