What Nacharam Flat Owners Ask
Is gypsum or POP the better choice for a flat here?
It depends on the room, and often both appear in one flat. Gypsum board on a metal frame gives flat, predictable planes with crisp gaps and very little wet work inside a finished home, which suits the newer blocks. POP is worked wet and is better where a curve is wanted or where new work has to tie into thick old plaster, which is common in the estate era flats. We decide room by room on the visit and the quote names the material for each.
Our block has sprinklers above the ceiling. Does that restrict the design?
It shapes the design rather than restricting it. Head positions and their spacing are fixed by the fire layout, so the plane, the cove runs and the drops are set out around them, with each head extended to the new level in an approved way and the pipework left reachable. What we will not do is bury a head or crowd it with a band, because that is the one part of a ceiling that has to work on the worst day.
Our living room is long and narrow. Can the ceiling help?
It can do more than paint will. A pattern that runs across the width, a band that stops short of the far wall, or two shallow levels instead of one long plane all break the length up, and cove light on the long walls makes them read further apart. We tape the options out on the ceiling during the visit, because this is a change you judge by standing in the room rather than on a drawing.
